Sam Andrew fue miembro fundador de la banda de rock de San Francisco, Big Brother & The Holding Company, en donde era guitarrista y vocalista ocasional junto a Janis Joplin. Cuando ésta deja el grupo en 1968, Sam la sigue en su nueva agrupación musical de acompañamiento, la Kozmic Blues Band, que, finalmente dejará en 1969; según Janis, en la biografía de David Dalton Pedazo de mi corazón, Sam nunca fue capaz de sacar la música que llevaba dentro. Además de músico, Andrew fue cineasta y director del musical sobre Janis Joplin.
Aunque puede considerarse que había un abismo físico entre las aptitudes vocálicas de ambos, lo cierto es que las voces de Sam y Janis conseguían complementarse casi a la perfección; es el caso de este “Call on me”, de su primer disco Big Brother and The Holding Company (1967)
